How long will it take to complete the Universe@home project?

I am new to this and have my Orangepi crunching away and wondering how many years will it take for all of us to complete this project? Another question what are is the cpu/gpu tasks? do they seach through images captured from satelites? |

Welcome to the project. I don't think the admins have ever stated how much data they have to crunch through or when they think the project might be completed. Also, don't know where their data sources are procured either. Has to be via satellites as the x-ray sources they study don't penetrate the atmosphere. Guessing XMM Newton and Chandra telescopes. But we have not heard much recently. What are we working on? A black-hole database? Is there a particular problem they are looking at? I think we are a bit lost in space. |

Thank you very much for your concern. We have finished a few papers in the meantime, but haven't notified you properly - sorry for that! Currently, we are running a big project in which we calculate thousands of models to obtain an in-depth understanding of the current state of stellar evolution models and possibility to perform a detailed comparison with observational data. However, this is a very long project and will probably take many additional months. Simultaneously, we do shorter projects concentrated on binary black hole mergers, X-ray binary stars powered by stellar wind accretion, and so-called self-lensing binaries, i.e. binary stars in which the light from one component is gravitationally lensed by the other component before it finds its way to our telescopes. I hope that we will provide you with more details shortly. Our work (similarly to the work of many people worldwide, currently) is strongly disturbed by the current epidemiological situation and probably will be even harder when the quarantines end.
